Tagua Nut Products
The Tagua tree is a palm tree growing freely under some rare sub-tropical climates and ours are from Ecuador. Their oval shaped fruits are called Tagua nuts.
These fruits, which are harvested annually, harden under the sun and can then be carved. Their weight, colour and hardness are similar to elephant ivory and, with their natural grain, they represent the best substitute for small carvings.
At the time of harvesting, the leaves of the trees have turned yellow and the harvesting helps to promote the tree’s growth.
The nuts are carved in the shape of characters, animals and netsukes with each carved nut showing the achievement of a Chinese master carver and requiring great talent.
As the Tagua nuts have small openings, sometimes the carving will also have a small opening.
When buying these carvings you are acquiring a wonderful collector’s item and a work of art which helps the protection of the natural environment of both the tree and the elephant. In addition, you are helping to keep alive the centuries-old skills of the craftsmen.
